In his message for the 57th World Day of Peace, initiated by Paul VI in 1968, Pope Francis delved into the potential risks and opportunities that Artificial Intelligence brings to humanity. The pontiff contemplated the impact of digital technologies on individuals, society, global stability, and world peace.

He remarked that while human intelligence is a divine gift, artificial intelligences are human creations designed to emulate our cognitive abilities, often with objectives that may not align with the common good. Francis stated: “We cannot assume that its development will inherently benefit humanity and peace. Achieving this requires responsible action and adherence to fundamental human values such as inclusion, transparency, security, fairness, privacy, and reliability.”

The Pope posed a critical question: can algorithms ever replace God’s merciful love, which uniquely knows how to forgive, unlike a rigid calculation? Clearly, they cannot: “Algorithms must not be permitted to dictate human rights, disregard essential values like compassion, mercy, and forgiveness, or eliminate the prospects of change and redemption,” the text asserts. Pope Francis urged reflection on the purposes behind our use of science and technology, emphasizing the necessity of protecting fundamental human rights, social justice, and the common good. He cautioned that the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence should not exacerbate inequalities and injustices but should aim to end wars and alleviate suffering.

“May Christians, believers of various religions, and all people of good will unite to tackle the challenges posed by the digital revolution and ensure that future generations inherit a more just, compassionate, and peaceful world,” concluded the Pope.

The significant advancements in artificial intelligence are profoundly impacting our daily, social, political, and economic lives. Pope Francis encourages open discussions about the meaning of these powerful and ambivalent technologies.

He emphasizes the importance of preventing the violent and discriminatory use of such tools, which could harm the most vulnerable and marginalized.

The Pope urges the responsible use of AI for the benefit of humanity and the protection of our planet, extending ethical reflection to education and law. Safeguarding human dignity and promoting true global fraternity are essential to ensure that technological development fosters justice and peace in the world.
